The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands' Statement Following the Failure to Agree on Sanctions

  • Casper Veldkamp presented a statement regarding the failure to agree on sanctions.
  • The statement outlined the situation in the government of the Netherlands.
  • The humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening, a famine has been announced.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Casper Veldkamp, delivered a statement after the cabinet meeting where it was not possible to agree on new sanctions against Israel. This has already weakened the fragile government coalition of the country.

Veldkamp, who previously held the position of ambassador to Israel, stated that it is impossible to ensure support for his coalition partners for the introduction of new measures in response to the planned military operation by Israel in Gaza. His statement came after the Netherlands joined 20 other countries in signing a joint declaration that condemns Israel's plans to build new settlements in the West Bank.

In early June, the Netherlands banned the entry of two Israeli ministers from the far-right party. Veldkamp believes that it is unrealistic to implement a policy that he considers necessary, and he expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

After his statement, members of the "New Social Contract" party also left the government, which previously declared a greater chaos in the government. Veldkamp proposed to ban imports from Israeli settlements in response to the escalation of the conflict, but did not receive support.

The minister's statement was based on the UN's announcement that a famine is being observed in Gaza, caused by the ongoing conflict. It begins to appear that the situation in Gaza continues to worsen without sufficient humanitarian aid and restrictions on humanitarian assistance.
