Launching a new league for women in baseball
- The women's league opens new opportunities for female athletes.
- Tryouts are taking place in Washington for women of different ages.
- Athletes aim to inspire young girls to succeed in baseball.
Washington — Victoria Ruelas has become the first American girl to participate in the Little League World Series in 1989. She highlights the progress of women in sports but desires more opportunities for girls in baseball. "Progress is steadily moving forward, and it needs to be faster," said Ruelas.
Next year, the launch of the Women's Professional Baseball League (WPBL) is planned. Currently, tryouts are ongoing in Washington, where women of different ages are competing for the chance to play professionally. Among the participants are stars like Mone Davis and Kelsey Uitmo.
Moneka Holguin, 45, who realized she could pursue her dreams, said: "It doesn't matter how many years you have; you can still chase your dreams." Another participant, Mikayla Minner, who has experience in baseball and softball, also believes it's important to show young girls that playing professionally is possible.
Minner noted that even if she doesn't make the league, her goal is to make baseball accessible for young girls. "This has to be a realistic goal for girls," she emphasized.
