State media in North Korea reported that the leader of the country, Kim Chen In, supervised the production of two new types of missile systems. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), these missiles have "high combat capability" and utilize "unique technologies." The production took place on August 23, 2025.
KCNA noted that the new systems demonstrated "quick reaction speed" to surface targets, including unmanned and cruise missiles. This production occurred amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, as South Korea confirmed that its military had previously fired warning shots at North Korean soldiers who crossed into the demilitarized zone.
Kim Chen In earlier suggested joint military exercises with the US and South Korea, characterizing them as "the biggest threat and confrontation." The leader of North Korea promised to enhance the country's nuclear arsenal. South Korean officials express concern that North Korea may acquire Russian technology for missile production in exchange for military assistance from Russia in Ukraine.
Kim Chen In also stated that the new missiles are very suitable for destroying various surface targets. Despite efforts to improve relations between North and South Korea, Kim indicated the emergence of the new president of South Korea, Lee Jae Myung, as a significant factor.
