On August 24, 2025, a fire occurred at the Kursk nuclear power plant in Russia as a result of the downing of a Ukrainian drone. According to information from the station's press service, the drone was shot down by Russian military air defense, as a result of which the backup transformer was damaged.

The fire was extinguished, but as a result of the explosion, the capacity of the third energy block was reduced to 50%. The press service noted that the radiation background in the territory and surrounding areas does not exceed normal levels.

At the time of the incident, the transformer did not belong to the nuclear part of the station and was loaded only at 30%. In the city of Kursk, the electricity supply operates in normal mode, there is no threat to safety.

In the early hours of August 24, the Kursk region experienced attacks from unidentified drones, resulting in the destruction of 57 drones in several regions of Russia. These incidents occurred against the backdrop of increased attacks by Ukrainian drones on the infrastructure of Russia, which has been ongoing since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
