Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. faces court for summons related to cartel ties

  • Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. faces court for summons related to cartel ties.
  • Chavez was detained in the USA for overstaying his visa and for lying on the green card application.
  • Chavez's deportation took place on September 19 after a month of detention.

On Saturday, a Mexican court announced that boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. faces court for summons related to cartel ties, but it may be difficult to summon him outside of the state of California, his lawyer reported.

Lawyer Ruben Fernando Benitez Alvarez confirmed that the court announced additional measures and granted three months for further investigation of the case. These comments were made after the hearing in the southern Mexican city of Hermosillo.

Chavez, who lived in the USA for several years, was arrested on July 2 by federal agents near his home in Los Angeles for overstaying his visa and lying on the application for obtaining a green card. The arrest occurred just days after his fight with well-known American boxer Jake Paul in Los Angeles.

Since 2019, Mexican prosecutors have been investigating the 39-year-old boxer following a complaint filed by American authorities regarding the Sinaloa cartel for organized crime, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and firearms.

After almost a month of detention, Chavez was deported on September 19 and handed over to Federal agents in the state of Sonora, who transferred him to the Federal Center for Social Rehabilitation in Hermosillo.

This case has led to investigations against 13 individuals, including Ovidio Guzman Lopez - the son of the imprisoned drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. Guzman Lopez was arrested in January 2023 and extradited to the USA after eight months.

Over the course of four years, the Federal Prosecutor's Office issued several arrest warrants, including one against Chavez.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that Chavez Jr. was released in 2023 in Mexico, but he was not detained, as he spent most of his time in the USA.

"We hope that he will be deported and he will serve his sentence in Mexico," Sheinbaum said in July.

This high-profile case drew attention to the background of the administration of Trump in Mexico with the aim of combating organized crime, including visas for well-known Mexican artists and reducing the number of deportations.

The life of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., one of the most popular and famous boxers in Mexico, was marked by scandals throughout his career, which began in the shadow of his father.

Chavez Jr. has had problems with addiction to various narcotics and has been arrested multiple times. In 2012, he was found guilty of driving under the influence in Los Angeles and sentenced to 13 days in jail.

At the beginning of 2024, he was arrested for possession of a firearm. Police reported that Chavez Jr. had two firearms. He was released on bail after posting a $50,000 bond with the condition of undergoing treatment for addiction.
