This is reported by The Yomiuri Shimbun, Global Times.

On August 24, 2025, President of South Korea Lee Jae-myung held an important meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. This was the first visit of a South Korean president to Japan since the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Lee emphasized the importance of cooperation with Japan for strengthening the alliance with the USA.

In the joint statement, published after the meeting, the leaders confirmed their readiness for closer cooperation in the areas of security and economics. This took place ahead of the summit between the USA president and Lee, scheduled for August 26. Lee noted that strengthening relations between South Korea and Japan would help enhance trilateral cooperation with the USA.

Both leaders agreed on restoring "discussional diplomatic format" and expanding exchange programs. This includes cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence and defense. Lee also confirmed that they would continue to adhere to agreements made by previous presidents regarding historical issues, such as the forced labor during Japan's colonial rule.

Additionally, some representatives of Lee expressed concern over his approach to Japan, which may create challenges for the president in the future.
