FIFA will hold the club World Cup in the summer of 2029
- FIFA will hold the club World Cup in the summer of 2029.
- Qatar is losing the opportunity to be the host of the tournament.
- It is being discussed to expand to 48 teams in the future.
FIFA has announced that the upcoming club World Cup will take place in the summer of 2029, which has become a serious blow to Qatar's proposal regarding hosting the tournament. This was reported by continental federations, which informed about FIFA's plans.
It is expected that in the tournament more than 32 clubs will participate, which competed this summer in the USA. The support from the side of the former clubs regarding the expansion of the tournament to 48 teams, as this will be the first time in human history that the World Championship will include this number of teams, was activated after the completion of the last tournament, in which Chelsea's team prevailed.
Holding the tournament in the summer could increase Qatar's chances of hosting it. Previously, as well as at the World Championship in 2022, the World Championship in Qatar was likely to be moved to winter, which caused a disruption in the European leagues. Qatari officials discussed the possibility of hosting the tournament with FIFA in June, but the new schedule may push them aside.
Currently, the most likely hosts are Spain and Morocco, which also help to hold the World Championship in 2030. Portugal, the third host country, while still not expressing great interest, wants its smaller stadiums to be able to be used for the qualifying tournament.
FIFA is also considering an alternative structure for the 2029 championship, which includes a series of qualifying matches every two weeks before the main tournament, to determine the finalists. This year, one qualifying match took place between Los Angeles FC and the Mexican club Club América, to determine the last participant from CONCACAF.
