Meteorologists Confirm That the Heat Wave in Spain Was the Most Intense

  • The heat wave in Spain lasted 16 days and was the most intense.
  • More than 1,100 deaths were linked to the heat this month.
  • Climate change contributes to the increased intensity of heat waves.

In September 2025, Spain experienced a 16-day heat wave, which became the most intense ever recorded in history, as reported by the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

From September 3 to 18, temperatures exceeded the previous record set in July 2022, and were 4.6°C higher than the average for similar events.

This heat wave led to numerous wildfires, which continue to affect northern and western regions of the country. According to estimates, more than 1,100 deaths in Spain were associated with this heat, according to data from the Carlos III Health Institute.

AEMET reported that since monitoring began in 1975, Spain has recorded 77 heat waves, six of which exceeded an average increase of 4°C or more, five of which occurred since 2019.

Scientists indicate that climate change is causing the prolongation, intensity, and frequency of heat waves worldwide. AEMET noted that the period from September 8 to 17 was the hottest for 10 days in Spain since 1950.

The agency confirmed that this summer in Spain was indeed hotter than in previous decades, and while not every summer will be hotter than the previous one, there is a clear trend towards more extreme temperatures.
