Typhoon Kadziki has hit Hainan and is moving towards Vietnam
- Nearly 20,000 people have been evacuated from unsafe zones
- Sanya has suspended business and transport operations
- Farmers in Hainan are rushing to harvest rice
Strong winds and heavy rains have engulfed Hainan Island in southern China and neighboring areas of the province of Hainan over the weekend, as Typhoon Kadziki moved towards the central coast of Vietnam.
According to reports from the official news agency Xinhua, nearly 20,000 people were evacuated from unsafe areas ahead of the storm's arrival. Fishing boats have returned to ports, and around 21,000 members of the fishing fleet have gone ashore.
Kadziki is intensifying, moving westward over the sea at a speed of 162 kilometers per hour. It is expected that in the southern areas of Hainan, including the popular resort of Sanya, there will be 25-35 centimeters of precipitation.
Sanya has suspended business operations and tourist zones, and also halted public transport and shipping. In social measures, residents have been instructed not to leave their homes without necessity.
The typhoon, whose name in Japanese means "spiny fish" or "swordfish," is expected to reach the coast of Vietnam on Monday evening. Farmers in the city of Hainan have rushed to harvest rice before the storm arrives.
Nearby provinces have banned the departure of vessels into the sea, and have also restricted those already at sea from returning. Authorities have tightened dam security, reservoirs, and irrigation systems.
