Public playlists demonstrate the musical tastes of public figures

  • Raily Uolz created a site that showcases the musical tastes of public figures.
  • Playlists include famous politicians and journalists.
  • The project highlights the issues of data confidentiality in social networks.

Last month, around 10:30 PM, a journalist received an encrypted message from a person who called themselves "Tim." They sent a link to a site that contains information about public figures, including their musical preferences on Spotify.

The website, known as Panama Playlists, gathered data on the listening habits of nearly 50 people, including politicians and journalists, who were unaware that this information is public. For example, the Vice President J. D. Vance listens to Justin Bieber, while popular meteorologist El Roker captures Elton John.

The author of the project turned out to be 23-year-old engineer Raily Uolz, who wanted to draw attention to the issues of data confidentiality. He emphasized that he does not intend to harm anyone's reputation, but rather hopes to encourage Spotify to improve the settings of confidentiality, as playlists used by users for listening are public.

Not all playlists that appeared on the site were confirmed as real. Some politicians did not respond to inquiries, while one of them, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, simplified information about his playlist.

This incident underscores that even though people tend to share information on the internet, there is a lot of data that they do not realize can be found.
