Deliveries to the USA are being suspended due to new tariff rules
- Global postal services have suspended shipments to the USA since August 25.
- The "de minimis" rule has been canceled, and customs duties on shipments will increase.
- The uncertainty regarding new customs procedures has caused difficulties for international carriers.
Global postal services are suspending deliveries to the United States due to new import duties that will begin to take effect from August 25, 2025. US President Donald Trump signed an order that canceled the "de minimis" rule, which allowed duty-free imports of goods valued up to $800. This rule had been in effect since 2016.
According to the new conditions, gifts valued under $100 will remain duty-free, but all other shipments will be subject to standard customs duties depending on their country of origin. Postal companies in Belgium, Denmark, and New Zealand have already suspended shipments to the USA, awaiting clarification on the new requirements.
The French national postal service reported that the USA did not provide enough time to prepare for the new customs procedures. DHL has also suspended the acceptance of packages from business clients until key issues regarding the new procedures are resolved.
According to estimates, in the past financial year, over $1.36 billion in shipments were sent to the USA under the "de minimis" rule. The government claims that canceling this rule will help combat increasing smuggling practices among suppliers and circumvent customs duties.
