President Donald Trump announced plans to deploy the National Guard to Chicago and Baltimore, claiming it is necessary to combat crime. These plans have sparked backlash among local politicians, who view such actions as politically motivated.
Minority Leader in the House of Representatives Hakeem Jeffries pointed out that Trump is "creating a crisis" to justify a military presence in cities where local authorities usually handle public safety issues. He emphasized that Trump "grabs headlines while Americans are living their lives," introducing military forces into everyday matters.
Trump asserts that the situation in Chicago, which is the third-largest city in the U.S., is critical and requires immediate action. He noted that "people in Chicago are crying out for help." Meanwhile, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson stated that crime has decreased by 40% over the year, and any attempts by federal authorities to send troops are unwarranted.
At the same time, Governor of Maryland Wes Moore also expressed concern about Trump's threat to send troops to Baltimore. According to him, there are already positive results in the fight against crime, including a 24% decrease in homicides this year.
Trump recalled that earlier he had already deployed the National Guard in Los Angeles in June, which drew criticism from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who accused the president of using the military to achieve political goals.
Critics of Trump believe that his actions are an attempt to divert attention from other issues that Americans are facing, and he is using the military as a tool to achieve his own objectives.
