SOUTH BEND, Ind. — CJ Carr, a young quarterback who grew up in a family where football is a tradition, has received the chance to make his own name in the Notre Dame team, which ranks 6th in the national standings.
Coach Marcus Freeman announced Carr's designation as the starting quarterback on Tuesday, highlighting his role in the upcoming match against Miami, which ranks 10th in the standings.
Carr noted that his strong points lie in the understanding of the game and interactions with his teammates. Last season, he only participated in one game, but now he has the opportunity to showcase his skills on the field.
He replaces Riley Leonard, who last season led the team to 13 wins and was selected in the draft by the Indianapolis Colts in April.
Initially, it was believed that experienced Steve Angeli, who was the backup quarterback, would also have a chance, but he transferred to the Syracuse team in the spring, leaving Carr and Kenny Minchie competing for the position.
Freeman stressed the importance of accepting decisions for the quarterback, stating that this specifically influenced the choice of Carr. According to the coach, both quarterbacks have shown improvement during training, which indicates healthy competition.
Carr, standing 1.91 meters tall and weighing 95 kilograms, possesses all the traits of an ideal quarterback. He excelled in the spring game, but during summer training camp, he faced challenges, including some interceptions.
Coach Freeman believes that both quarterbacks will help elevate the team to its first national championship since 1988.
