Expansion of forest fires in California and Oregon prompts evacuations

  • Forest fires in California and Oregon are prompting evacuations.
  • More than 10,000 people have received evacuation warnings.
  • The fires threaten thousands of homes, and the situation remains critical.

Forest fires in the wine-producing regions of California and central Oregon have intensified overnight, prompting evacuations of hundreds of people, while firefighters are attempting to contain the blaze in dry and windy conditions.

The Picket fire in Napa County has grown to more than 10 square miles (26 square kilometers) and was 11% contained as of early Monday, according to information from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Approximately 190 individuals received evacuation orders, while another 360 remain under evacuation warnings, as the fire threatens nearly 500 structures near Aetna Springs and Pope Valley, reported Jason Clay, a spokesman for Calfire Sonoma Lake-Napa Unit.

More than 1,230 firefighters are battling the blaze, which started Thursday during extreme dry conditions. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

In the western states of the U.S., a wave of heat is affecting some areas, with forecasts of dangerous temperatures continuing through the weekend in Washington, Oregon, Southern California, Nevada, and Arizona.

Clay noted that conditions improved since the peak of the fire, with temperatures expected to reach around 34°C this week. However, during the day, a decrease in humidity and increased winds are anticipated in the afternoons.

The fire began in the same area that experienced the Glass fire in 2020, which burned nearly 105 square miles (272 square kilometers) and destroyed over 1,500 structures.

In Oregon, the Flat fire in Deschutes and Jefferson counties has grown to nearly 34 square miles (88 square kilometers) and threatens more than 4,000 homes, the state's fire marshal's office reported. Nearly 10,000 people have received some kind of evacuation notice.

The fire started Thursday evening and quickly spread under extreme dry and windy conditions. Firefighters are struggling against isolated thunderstorms in southern Oregon, which could potentially move northward this weekend.

It is important to note that the fire could be linked to climate changes, which indicate that increased human activity from the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and gas, generates more intense heat waves and droughts, which in turn create conditions for more severe forest fires.
