New York — Yasmin Tjen achieved the first victory in the singles draw for Indonesian tennis players at Grand Slam tournaments in 22 years, reaching the second round, where she awaits a match against the champion of the 2021 US Open, Emma Raducanu.
Tjen defeated 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 on Sunday. This allowed her to become the first Indonesian tennis player to compete in the singles draw at a major tournament since 2004, when this was accomplished by Angelique Widjaja.
“When Emma won the tournament, I was in college and watched a lot of tennis through the grass. This inspired me,” Tjen recalled. She studied at Pepperdine University, where she was a silver medalist in the NCAA doubles draw in 2024, and after finishing her studies, decided to try professional tennis.
In 2023, Tjen had a record of 55-10, winning 27 matches mostly on the ITF circuit. In the match against Kudermetova, she rallied after losing a 3-1 lead in the second set, finishing the match with a beautiful volley.
The next match against Raducanu promises to be significantly larger, as Tjen is expecting a large crowd. “It will be a big audience, I believe, playing against her,” she noted.
