Yankees Decided to Bench Antonio Volpe

  • Volpe is missing the match due to poor form and performance.
  • Caballero, the new player, replaced Volpe in the shortstop position.
  • The Yankees are fighting for a playoff spot, trailing behind the leaders.

New York (AP) — New York Yankees shortstop Antonio Volpe has been sent to the bench for the last match of the series against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday evening. Volpe is going through a tough period, having only one hit in the last 28 at-bats and leading the league with 17 errors.

Currently, he has a batting average of .208 with 18 home runs and 65 RBIs over 128 games this season. In the match against the Red Sox, Volpe did not appear in the starting lineup for the fifth time this year.

Team manager Aaron Boone explained that Volpe "struggles with the bat lately," which is why the team decided to give the start to new player Jose Caballero, who was recently called up from Tampa. Caballero has impressive statistics, achieving .320 in the last 14 games with the Yankees.

Volpe achieved .249 in his first 69 games, but since June 14, his average has fallen to .153. Yankees fans express concern about the sudden drop in his performance, as the team is fighting for a playoff spot.

This season, Volpe also recorded 17 errors, placing him second in the league for the most errors among shortstops, trailing only Elly De La Cruz.

Aaron Boone noted that Volpe "is very talented" and is trying to find his level in the game, despite the high expectations placed on the young player. Volpe won the Gold Glove award in 2023, but his recent form raises serious questions.

The Yankees currently sit in sixth place in the American League East Division, 1.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox, with whom they are competing for a playoff spot.
