- The investigation involves the Sinaloa cartel and organized crime.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the boxer and son of legendary Mexican boxer, was released last week from federal custody in the state of Sonora, where he had been detained following his deportation from the USA. Chavez Jr. remains in custody after a judge in Hermosillo ruled that he could await trial in conditional release.
The judge prohibited him from leaving Mexico and also set a three-month period for the continuation of the investigation. Chavez Jr. is accused of being involved in organized crime and illegal importation of drugs into the country. The boxer’s attorney, Ruben Benitez Alvares, called the charges speculative and misleading.
Chavez Jr. was arrested in the USA in July 2023 after a match with American boxer Jake Paul. Mexican authorities had an order for his arrest from 2023, but they could not detain him as he spent most of his time in the USA. The case against Chavez is part of a broader investigation that the Mexican prosecutor's office began in 2019 regarding the Sinaloa cartel.
