For the first time in many years, a case of human infection with the guinea worm, known as the new world guinea worm (NWS), has been confirmed in the USA. This case was confirmed in the state of Maryland, where the patient returned from Guatemala. According to information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this is the first human infection case linked to travels to the country, where there have been outbreaks of the disease.
Guinea worms lay their eggs in the warm-blooded hosts, and their larvae penetrate into living tissue, which can lead to serious complications or death. In 2023, there has been an increase in reported cases of infections in Central America, which has contributed to the documentation in the USA.
The US Department of Agriculture has warned about the risks associated with these parasites, noting that in the country there are no approved pharmaceutical agents for treating NWS. In response to the threat, a decision was made to ban the import of pork from Mexico, and there are also plans to build a sterilization facility for producing sterile worms in Texas.
This facility will become part of efforts to combat the widespread parasite, as guinea worms can cause significant harm not only to livestock but also to agriculture as a whole.
