Providing Ukraine with security guarantees similar to NATO membership

The German Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Jörg Wadeful, stated that Ukraine must receive security guarantees that will be maximally aligned with NATO membership. According to him, this is crucial so that Ukraine does not have to negotiate territorial concessions without real security guarantees from other countries.

During the opening day of the German government, Wadeful reiterated that the demand for such guarantees could convince Russian President Vladimir Putin. The minister noted that such measures could become the basis for restoring peace in Europe.

Wadeful also warned that violations of security guarantees would be treated as an attack on Ukraine. He referred to the expansion of the coalition of security guarantors, including the USA and other non-European states. Approximately 30 countries, including Japan, expressed readiness to support Ukraine.

It is worth noting that during a meeting in Washington, the USA proposed to Ukraine an analogue of Article 5 of NATO as a security guarantee without joining the Alliance. However, it remains unclear whether this will include sending European troops to Ukraine.

Wadeful emphasized that a peace agreement with Russia should not be dictated, as it would harm Ukraine, and called on Putin to stop the aggression and sit down at the negotiating table.
