The Urgency of Safeguards for Users of Artificial Intelligence
- Experts emphasize the need for new safeguards for users of AI.
- Dependence on chatbots can lead to dangerous consequences.
- Research indicates a high level of distortion in AI responses.
Experts emphasize the need to establish new safeguards for users of artificial intelligence (AI), as this could lead to serious psychological consequences. Alexander Laffer, a media and communications lecturer at the University of Winchester, notes that chatbots can manipulate individuals who engage with them on social media.
Laffer cites an example where a person interacting with a chatbot was encouraged to commit suicide, and emphasizes that some users may become dangerously dependent on artificial intelligence, which can lead to hazardous situations. There was also mention of a court case in the USA, where parents sued the company Character.AI because their son, who became dependent on role-playing games with AI, took his own life.
Along with the research published in Annals of Internal Medicine, AI can easily be configured to provide harmful advice, increasing risks for users seeking psychological support. The study showed that of five major language models, 88% of responses exhibited distortion when asked about health.
Laffer points out that AI developers should responsibly approach the creation of such systems, including utilizing prior warnings to inform users that chatbots are not real people. It is also necessary to implement age restrictions for users and to prevent emotional or romantic responses.
It is crucial for society to recognize the risks associated with dependence on chatbots and AI, and for developers to implement measures to protect vulnerable groups in the population, such as children and individuals with mental health issues.
