Kilmar Abrego Garcia detained under arrest after inspection
- Kilmar Abrego Garcia was detained after an inspection by ICE
- He filed a lawsuit against his deportation to Uganda
- Advocates believe the deportation is punishment for activism
Kilmar Abrego Garcia was detained after he appeared before the immigration and customs enforcement agency (ICE) in Baltimore on Monday. This inspection took place a few days after he rejoined his family after 160 days of separation due to a volcanic eruption that led to his deportation to El Salvador.
His attorney, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, stated that the detention was punishment for Abrego exercising his constitutional rights. He also reported that his client filed a new lawsuit, seeking to prevent his deportation to Uganda.
Abrego, who is 30 years old, arrived in the U.S. around 2011, fleeing gang violence. Following the volcanic eruption, the U.S. government, under community and judicial pressure, returned him to El Salvador but immediately faced allegations of involvement with a gang, which his attorney believes are baseless.
In April, the Trump administration acknowledged that Abrego's deportation was "administrative punishment." However, despite this, officials allege his connections to the MS-13 gang, which he and his family categorically deny.
The situation of Abrego has sparked significant public outcry, and his advocates assert that the deportation system is being weaponized against him for his active stance on legal issues.
Stay tuned for updates.
