Growing corn depends on weather and climatic conditions

  • Climatic changes affect corn yields in the USA
  • A record harvest is predicted, despite the weather challenges
  • Farmers are utilizing new technologies to improve yields

In the state of Michigan, Rob Rind and his brother farm over 200 acres, growing corn, soybeans, peas, and sorghum. Last year they had a good harvest; however, this year the situation has changed.

In the spring, Rind noted the condition of the plants and the moisture, stating that the corn looks fine, but the quality of the kernels is lacking. "It's quite alarming when you step into the field and see that everything looks poor," he noted.

Climatic changes create challenging conditions for farmers, including elevated nighttime temperatures, droughts, and excessive moisture, which affect the yield of crops. Among the main problems are insufficient pollination, as at high temperatures crops can grow too quickly, and pollinators may not be able to function normally.

Despite these challenges, this year a record corn harvest is predicted in the USA due to favorable weather conditions during the growing season. According to meteorologist Brad Rippey, this summer in most areas where corn is grown, normal or above-average rainfall has been recorded.

Additionally, farmers are faced with new challenges, such as increased humidity and temperature, which can significantly impact future yields. In September 2025, only 3% of the regions that grow corn will have lower moisture levels, compared to 60% last year.

Challenging weather conditions complicate farmers' plans for the upcoming season. Farmers like Rind face difficulties in adapting to new decisions regarding the renewal of technology or expanding their contracts due to uncertainty with yields.

Farmers are also turning to new technologies to improve yields. For example, the company PowerPollen has developed equipment for mechanical pollen collection, which helps in cases where natural pollination does not occur due to adverse conditions.
