London -- Interceptors of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) on Tuesday intercepted a Russian aircraft in the identification zone of Alaskan airspace (ADIZ) for the third time in the past week, the command stated in a release.
For the interception and visual identification of the Russian Il-20 aircraft, which was conducting reconnaissance, one E-3 Sentry control aircraft, two F-16 interceptors, and two KC-135 refueling aircraft were deployed.
According to NORAD information, the Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter U.S. or Canadian airspace. "This Russian activity in the Alaska ADIZ occurs regularly and is not considered a threat," the statement noted.
The ADIZ begins where sovereign airspace ends, and it is designated as part of international airspace, where identification of all aircraft is required in the interests of national security.
During the past week, American F-16 interceptors intercepted Russian Il-20 aircraft twice, once on September 20 and the other time on September 21.
"NORAD employs a multi-layered defense system, including satellites, ground and airborne radars, and interceptors for detection and tracking of aircraft, as well as for informing about the corresponding actions," the command stated in the release.
"NORAD is always ready to employ a range of response options for the defense of North America," the command added.
