Evacuations are underway due to wildfires in California and Oregon

  • Wildfires in California and Oregon have prompted thousands of evacuations.
  • Extreme weather is complicating the fight against the flames.
  • The Picket Fire has consumed more than 6,800 acres in California.

In Northern California and Central Oregon, thousands of homeowners have received notices about evacuation in connection with forest fires that ignited in the dry and hot weather.

The Picket Fire, which has engulfed more than 6,800 acres in the Napa area, was only 13% contained as of Monday, according to the state’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). Approximately 150 people were forced to leave their homes, while another 360 received warnings about evacuation due to the threat to 500 structures near Aetna Springs and Pope Valley, about 80 miles north of San Francisco. Some evacuation notices were later rescinded.

In Oregon, the Flat Fire, which consumed 29 square miles, also triggered evacuation notices, including 1,000 homeowners received notices to leave their properties immediately. Firefighters have been trying to create containment lines and continued to battle flames in some residential areas, but faced serious challenges due to rugged terrain, low humidity, and high temperatures.

More than 1,230 firefighters, supported by 10 helicopters, are battling the blazes in California, which began in the remote area on Thursday after a week of extreme weather. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Residents of the western states of the U.S. are suffering from a wave of heat that has already prompted evacuation orders for some individuals. Temperatures have reached dangerous levels in Washington, Oregon, Southern California, Nevada, and Arizona. Although the weather is expected to improve, humidity is likely to drop again due to the strengthening winds.

The Picket Fire originated in the same area where the Glass Fire occurred in 2020, which destroyed nearly 105 square miles and more than 1,500 structures. The 2020 fire was caused by a windstorm, during which the ongoing fire activity is primarily fueled by dry vegetation on steep slopes.

In Oregon, the fire is spreading through canyons, where it is difficult to create containment lines. The fire began on Thursday evening and quickly increased in size due to hot and windy conditions. Firefighters are monitoring isolated thunderstorms, which could potentially shift to the north.
