US Ambassador Kushner summoned to Paris over letter on antisemitism
- France summoned the US ambassador over his statements on antisemitism.
- Kushner called on Macron to take action to protect Jews.
- This incident underscores the tension between the US and Europe.
US Ambassador to France Charles Kushner was summoned to Paris after he wrote a letter to President Emmanuel Macron, in which he asserted that France is not doing enough to combat antisemitism. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France called his statements "unacceptable" and stated that Kushner must appear on Monday for discussion.
In his letter, published in the Wall Street Journal, Kushner noted that "public statements that criticize Israel encourage extremists and put the lives of Jews in France at risk." He urged Macron to implement decisive measures to ensure the safety of Jewish schools and synagogues.
The French ministry stated that Kushner's statements violate international law and obligations not to interfere in the internal affairs of another country. This incident reflects the growing rift between the US and its European allies, particularly regarding the conflict in Gaza.
Kushner, who has held the ambassadorial position since July 2025, is also the father of Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former President Donald Trump. Trump appointed Kushner in 2020 after he acknowledged his role in avoiding taxes and interfering in the investigation.
