European postal services suspend shipments to the USA due to new tariffs

  • Many European postal services have suspended shipments to the USA due to new tariffs.
  • The suspension also affects Japan and Switzerland.
  • Small businesses in Europe are struggling with increased shipping costs.

Postal services in Europe have suspended most shipments to the USA due to unforeseen circumstances related to new import tariffs that will be implemented on September 29. In particular, French company La Poste, German Deutsche Post, Spanish Correos, and other operators have stopped accepting outgoing shipments.

Austrian Österreichische Post and British Royal Mail have also announced the suspension of accepting parcels to allow for potential delivery of goods, sent prior to the tariff changes. The new rules apply to goods valued at less than $800, which previously could be imported without paying taxes.

US President Donald Trump signed an order to repeal the tax exemption that allowed small parcels to be imported without charge. This leads to increased costs for small European businesses that export goods to the USA.

Many European postal services reported that they will continue to send only letters and gifts valued up to €100, but these shipments will be subject to additional checks. DHL, the largest logistics company in Europe, has also stopped processing parcels for businesses that are destined for the USA due to unforeseen circumstances regarding the new tariffs.

In other countries, such as Japan and Switzerland, they also announced the suspension of shipments to the USA due to the termination of the "de minimis" exemption. This change has caused significant concern among small enterprises that may face losses due to new shipping costs.
