Trump proposes renaming the Department of Defense to the Department of War
- Trump plans to revert the name of the Department of Defense to the Department of War.
- The name change is related to the history of the former USA in world wars.
- Polls show that a portion of the population supports the old name.
President of the USA Donald Trump stated that he plans to revert the name of the Department of Defense to its historical version, known as the Department of War. He announced this during a joint press conference with President of South Korea Lee Jae-myung in the Oval Office.
Trump noted that his Secretary of Defense, Pat Hegseth, "works incredibly hard" at the Department of War, and expressed the opinion that changing the name could be beneficial in the long run. He believes that the history of the former USA in both world wars deserves recognition through the return of this name.
The name change of the Department of War took place in 1947, when President Harry Truman signed the National Security Act, which unified the army, navy, and newly created air force under one roof, which received the name Department of Defense. Trump believes that the name Department of Defense does not reflect the active role of the USA in military affairs.
Trump also mentioned that the name change could be related to political correctness, which, in his opinion, has diminished the fighting spirit of the country. He asserts that many people support the return to the old name.
Previous polls indicated that a portion of the USA population favors the name Department of War, considering it more accurate. This issue has sparked discussions about ethical standards related to the name of the Department of War.
