During the press conference, Pritzker called on Trump not to come to Chicago
- The governor of Illinois rejected Trump's plans regarding Chicago.
- Local leaders consider the president's actions authoritarian.
- Crime in Chicago has decreased, raising concerns about the adequacy of military deployment.
The governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, stated on Monday that he opposes sending military units to Chicago. Pritzker noted that such a plan is unnecessary and an authoritarian move, aimed at intimidating the president's opponents.
"Do not come to Chicago," said Pritzker during a press conference in downtown Chicago. He emphasized that the Trump administration has not consulted local leaders regarding possible deployment of the National Guard, which has caused additional concern.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also expressed opposition to the president's plans, asserting that instead of combating crime, which, according to him, has significantly decreased, Trump aims to control the National Guard for the purpose of occupying a large, diverse city that he perceives as a Democratic administration.
Leaders of Illinois commented after Trump stated that Chicago could become a "targeted" city where units of the National Guard would be sent after similar deployments in Washington and Los Angeles this summer.
