Activists are demanding the reinstatement of the rainbow crosswalk, which was located near the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, after it was closed following the Trump administration's directive. This crosswalk was part of a memorial for 49 people who were killed during the attack in June 2016.

On Sunday, August 25, 2025, representatives from the Florida Department of Transportation again painted the rainbow crosswalk black and white after protesters filled it with their colors. The crosswalk was first painted in black and white in the middle on August 23, 2025.

A representative from the Department of Transportation noted that their obligation lies in ensuring road safety and compliance with traffic systems. They assert that roads should not be used for social, political, or ideological purposes.

At the same time, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stated that he would not allow the use of state roads for political purposes. Activists who appeared at the site are demanding the reinstatement of the rainbow crosswalk, but they are still waiting for their work to be recognized.

Protesters are returning daily to call for the crosswalk to be reinstated, regardless of the existing legal rights that control the situation. Currently, demonstrations are being planned against the policies of the Department of Transportation regarding rainbow crosswalks in several cities in Florida, including Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach.
