Netflix to broadcast the 2026 World Baseball Classic in Japan

  • Netflix has acquired the rights to broadcast the WBC in Japan.
  • The sixth edition of the tournament will take place in 2026 with 20 teams.
  • Japan was the champion in 2023, defeating the USA.

Netflix has obtained the media rights to broadcast the 2026 World Baseball Classic in Japan, which will be the first instance where a platform will stream live sports in this country. All 47 matches of the tournament will be available for viewing live and on demand.

The Japanese team is the reigning champion, having won the previous tournament in 2023. In the final, Japan defeated the USA team with a score of 3-2, while the last out was made by the renowned player Shohei Ohtani.

The 2026 edition will see the sixth edition of the World Baseball Classic, featuring 20 teams competing in four groups. Matches will take place in Tokyo, San Juan (Puerto Rico), Houston, and Miami, starting from March 5, with the final scheduled for March 17 in Miami.

This year underscores the growing popularity of the tournament and interest from global media companies. Netflix also plans to participate in the broadcasting of other sporting events, such as the Home Run Derby, which MLB supports in such a decision.
