Shortages in Philadelphia's public transport are affecting users

  • Shortages in Philadelphia may spill over to other cities in the USA.
  • The SEPTA agency plans to reduce half of its services.
  • They plan to increase fares on rides by 21.5%.

Commuters and students in Philadelphia are getting used to leaving earlier on Mondays to cope with the shortened service hours, which the regional transit agency considers the biggest risks in the USA. These changes started to take effect from the first day of the school year in the sixth largest city in the country.

Shortages may serve as a signal for other large transit agencies in the USA, which are grappling with rising costs and reduced passenger numbers. In particular, changes are also planned in Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, and Pittsburgh.

Many agencies are not receiving sufficient funding to cover inflationary costs, while the number of passengers remains lower than dependent indicators.

In Philadelphia, about 52,000 students use public transport to get to school. Students are finding that they have to leave earlier to reach their classes on time due to longer routes, detoured buses, and missed stops.

SEPTA announced that by January 1, it will cut half of its services due to a deficit of over 200 million dollars. This includes the cancellation of bus routes with low demand and reduced frequency of service for buses, trolleys, and trains across the entire region.

To cover expenses, they plan to raise fares by 21.5% starting January 1, which will affect approximately 800,000 passengers daily. The price for a ride on a bus, subway, or trolley will increase from $2.50 to $2.90.

In the future, the agency plans to freeze the maximum and introduce additional cuts, including limiting service hours for subway lines to 9:00 PM, whereas previously they operated until 1:30 AM.

Other agencies, such as the Chicago transit administration, are also exploring the possibility of closing lines and shortening routes due to serious budgetary problems.
