Venus Williams Returns to US Open After Two-Year Break
- Venus Williams has returned to the US Open after a 16-month break.
- She played a first-round match against Karolína Muchová, but demonstrated a good level of play.
- Williams remains a popular figure among fans, regardless of the outcome.
New York — Venus Williams began her first match in the Grand Slam tournament after a two-year hiatus on Monday evening at the US Open, competing against 29-year-old Karolína Muchová at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Celebrating her 45th birthday, Williams became the oldest single competitor in the tournament since 1981.
In the first round, despite not having competed for 16 months, Williams managed to match her opponent in the match, winning the second set, but ultimately lost with scores of 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. This was her 25th appearance at the US Open, where she first appeared in 1997.
After losing a series of matches in her last three appearances, including this one, Williams demonstrated that she can still compete at the highest level. She won two major titles at the US Open in 2000 and 2001 and has 14 trophies in total in her career.
Williams's return was made possible thanks to her recovery after surgery on her right knee last year, and she received a wild card to participate in the tournament in the singles draw. Starting her journey during the tournament, she stated: "I want to be the best version of myself, and that is what I expect from myself."
Regardless of the outcome, her performance was positively received, and she left the court under the watchful eyes of fans who continue to be captivated by her career.
