- The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine condemned Woody Allen's participation in the Russian festival.
- Allen expressed criticism of the war but referred to cultural exchange.
- The festival runs until September 27, participants support the Kremlin.
On September 25, 2025, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine condemned Woody Allen's participation in the virtual event of the Moscow International Film Festival, calling it "a mockery and an image" for the victims of Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine. Allen appeared at the festival via video link, which sparked criticism from the Hollywood community, which supported Ukraine during the war.
In the broadcast of the Russian state television, Allen spoke about his love for Russian cinema, mentioning trips to Russia and the USSR. The Ukrainian Ministry of Culture noted that his participation in the festival promotes Kremlin propaganda and is an image for Ukrainian actors who have suffered since the war.
In his statement, Allen expressed criticism towards Putin and condemned the invasion, but referred to the continuation of cultural exchange. He believes that the suspension of artistic dialogue is not the right way to resolve the conflict.
The festival, which runs until September 27, also featured Serbian director Emir Kusturica, who is known for his support of Putin. The Moscow International Film Festival, where this event takes place, will be held for the first time in September 2024.
