The court ordered Utah to redraw congressional maps by 2026
- The court ordered Utah to redraw congressional districts by 2026.
- The court's decision was a response to the challenges to the congressional map from the 2018 elections.
- Texas and California are also discussing changes to congressional maps.
This was reported by NBC News, ABC News.
The Utah District Court demanded that the state redraw its congressional districts. This ruling was a consequence of the Republican party, which controls the state legislature, ignoring the election results that supported a map that limited partisan manipulation of districts.
This incident further escalates the national struggle for control over Congress ahead of the 2026 elections.
Republicans are trying to maintain their majority in the House of Representatives, just like in Texas, where Republicans, under the pressure of President Donald Trump, began redistricting, hoping to gain up to five new congressional seats for their party.
This spurred other states to also discuss the possibility of changing their districts. Last week, in response to the Texas ruling, California lawmakers passed their plan to temporarily redraw districts to create up to five new districts that would support Democrats.
In Utah, a legal battle connected to the 2018 elections, which created an independent commission for the development of congressional maps, continues. It is currently unknown whether this issue will be resolved, and whether Utah will be able to create new maps for the elections.
Judge Dianna M. Giberson, in her 76-page ruling, stated that the legislative authority improperly disregarded the will of voters, adopting a new law that softened restrictions on partisan manipulation of districts and required lawmakers to vote for a map from an independent commission.
The court barred the state from conducting future elections under the previous district boundaries and also ordered lawmakers to create a new map within 30 days, which would correspond to the established districts from 2018.
Utah is predominantly a Republican state, but the most populous area is Salt Lake County, which makes up more than a third of Utah's population and has a democratic leaning.
