Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington announced that he is recovering after surgery involving aortic stenosis, which was performed due to health issues that forced him to leave the team in June.
Washington, who is 73 years old, is returning to the public after the operation, when he led the team in Texas. He will not return to managing the team this season, but hopes for the possibility of returning for the upcoming year.
The last time Washington managed the team was June 19 during a game against the New York Yankees. After that, he received medical leave due to breathing problems. Doctors found serious blockages in the heart valves, which required urgent surgical intervention.
The operation took place on June 30, and Washington was released from the hospital on July 7. After that, he changed his habits, recovering from the procedure and improving his diet.
Washington plans to stay with the team until the end of the season, when the Angels return to the postseason. The team currently has 25 wins and 31 losses under the leadership of Reynaldo Montgomerie, who is filling the managerial role in place of Washington.
Washington has extensive experience; he was the manager of the Texas Rangers, leading the team to its first two appearances in the World Series in 2010 and 2011. He also worked with the Atlanta Braves from 2017 to 2023 and was part of the championship team in 2021.
