Severe dust storm in Phoenix causes widespread power outages
- The dust storm caused power outages for over 60,000 people.
- Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport reported flight delays due to strong winds.
- The National Weather Service warns of hazardous conditions for drivers.
On Monday, August 25, 2025, a massive dust storm, known as a haboob, swept through the Phoenix metropolitan area, creating conditions with near-zero visibility. This storm resulted in significant consequences, including power outages for over 60,000 consumers, primarily in the surrounding Maricopa area.
During the storm, winds reached speeds of 70 miles per hour, which caused widespread damage to infrastructure, including the destruction of the terminal at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. As a result, the airport reported flight delays for several hours, as well as a brief grounding of all flights on the ground.
The National Weather Service issued warnings for hazardous weather conditions, advising drivers to remain in place if they became trapped in the storm. Winds that contributed to the storm lifted dust from the desert, forming towering walls of dust that could reach thousands of feet in height.
Despite the fact that dust storms are a common occurrence during the monsoon season in Arizona, this storm proved to be particularly severe, producing strong winds that passed through the area.
