Scientists in China Conducted the First Pig-to-Human Organ Transplant
- The first pig-to-human organ transplant in the world was conducted in China.
- The transplant lasted for a total of nine days without rejection.
- Research shows potential, but underscores the challenges of xenotransplantation.
Scientists in China successfully performed the first pig-to-human organ transplant in the world. The operation took place in a hospital in Guangzhou, where a pig with genetic modifications became a donor for a 39-year-old man who had been declared brain dead after a hemorrhagic stroke.
The transplant process, known as xenotransplantation, allowed the organ to function for up to 216 hours, without showing signs of rejection or infection. The pig organ, weighing 70 kg, had been previously modified to reduce the risk of reactions from the human immune system.
Research published in the journal Nature Medicine indicates that despite the success of the operation, three to six days after the transplant, signs of rejection were observed. Scientists believe that further research could improve the results of xenotransplantation, including through advanced genetic modifications of pigs and enhanced immunosuppressive treatments.
