Tropical Storm Causes Damage in Vietnam and Neighboring Countries

On Tuesday, heavy rains hit parts of Southeast Asia after the tropical storm struck Vietnam, flooding streets in the capital. The storm, known as Typhoon Kajiki, brought with it maximum winds of 117 km/h (73 mph). There were reports of downed power lines, fallen trees, and destruction of electrical poles.

Vietnamese media report that the remnants of the typhoon have transformed into a tropical depression over Laos. The government of Vietnam has planned the evacuation of nearly 600,000 people from the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Hue, and Danang, where over 152,000 homes are located in high-risk areas. More than 16,500 military personnel and 107,000 paramilitary workers are participating in evacuations or are ready for search-and-rescue operations.

Two airports in the provinces of Thanh Hoa and Quang Binh remain closed after flights were suspended on Monday. The national meteorological service warned of possible flooding and landslides. In Vietnam, one death has been reported, a person who was electrocuted while trying to prepare their home for the storm.
