A Girl Celebrated Her 15th Birthday, Which Became a Worldwide Celebration
- Isela celebrated her quinceañera, which started unnoticed.
- Local businesses and the government supported the celebration, which gathered thousands of people.
- The girl received a parcel of land and a scholarship for education.
15-year-old Isela Anaïe Santiago Morales appeared under the camera's objectives, having emerged from a vintage car in the rain. The girl, who is the daughter of local waste collectors, dressed in a pink dress, looked overwhelmed and distressed. Just six weeks before her quinceañera—a traditional celebration of a 15-year-old girl in Latin America—it practically went unnoticed.
Isela's parents had prepared it already and invited friends, but many did not show up. Her father, to prevent her from being disappointed, posted on Facebook a message that only 40 people remained on the guest list. This simple message changed her life.
Isela lives with her parents and sister in a cramped wooden house in Actlì, a town with a population of about 32,000 in the central state of San Luis Potosí. Her mother has a part-time job, while her parents earn a living collecting waste. They saved for a year to organize a small celebration on July 9.
However, when the number of guests turned out to be minimal, disappointment was palpable. Quinceañeras have deep cultural significance in Mexico and Latin America, symbolizing the transition from childhood to womanhood. After her story became known, offers of help began to arrive from local businesses and the community.
The municipality prohibited the stadium as a venue for the celebration. On Saturday evening, despite the heavy rain, thousands of people arrived for the celebration. More than a dozen local musical groups performed free of charge, while the state government funded the main performance, which lasted until midnight.
Nearly 2000 people attended the celebration, some coming from other towns in Mexico and even from Texas. Isela, who is shy and not used to being in front of cameras, asked guests to bring toys for underprivileged children instead of gifts.
Throughout the evening, she received a package, in which was a letter regarding the granting of her parcel of land in Actlì. She was overwhelmed, realizing that she now owns real estate in her hometown. The local government also granted her a scholarship for continued education.
The celebration lasted until early Sunday, despite the rain. Isela, who recently gained significant attention, remained shy, but was delighted at the moment when she cut her cake. Her father, who started everything with a Facebook post, remained in the background during the celebration.
