French Prime Minister Aiming to Retain New Confidence Vote

  • Opposition parties against Prime Minister Borne's plans
  • The financial market reacted to the decline of the CAC-40 index
  • Possibility of new votes after the confidence vote

French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne announced the confidence vote on September 8 in response to the opposition's stance regarding her budget cut plans. The opposition parties, including the National Rally, Socialists, and Ecologists, have already stated their intention to vote against her government.

Borne, who has been leading a minority government since last summer, stressed that France is facing a "difficult moment" in relation to the rising budget deficit. She emphasized the need for urgent measures, stating that "raising taxes is normal, but it still doesn’t guarantee that nothing will be done."

The situation is escalating with protests planned for September 8, which support the movement "Block Everything." This movement emerged after Borne's announcement about plans to cut the budget by 44 billion euros. The market reacted negatively: the CAC-40 index fell by 1.59% on Monday and another 2% on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Eric Lombert noted that the government is trying to reach a compromise with the opposition, although the chances of this seem slim. The leader of the "Unsubmissive France" party, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, called for the resignation of President Emmanuel Macron, asserting that he is the one responsible for the crisis.

If Borne's government does not receive support, Macron may either keep her in office or call new elections. The government is also considering the possibility of shortening two national holidays to reduce spending.
