- The USA and EU agreed not to impose tariffs on electronic transactions.
US President Donald Trump expressed a threat to introduce new tariffs and restrictions on exports for countries that impose digital taxes on American technology companies. He stated that such taxes, which include a 2% tax on income in the United Kingdom, "discriminate against American technology" and give advantages to Chinese companies.
In his post on the Truth Social platform, Trump emphasized that such measures would not be canceled; he plans to introduce significant additional tariffs on exports from these countries to the USA. Trump also mentioned that this month he has already introduced new tariffs on dozens of countries.
Trump's statement came after a joint declaration by the USA and EU, where the sides agreed not to impose tariffs on electronic transactions and to combat "unfair trade barriers." The EU clarified that it does not intend to change its digital laws.
Earlier this year, Canada canceled its digital tax, while the United Kingdom retained its 2% tax on income from platforms on the internet. Trump believes that digital taxes are unfair for companies like Amazon, Google, and Meta.
