Yangwang U9 Sets New Speed Record for Electric Cars

  • The new record surpasses the previous one by 20 miles
  • The car has a power output of 2977 horsepower

The Yangwang U9 has set a new speed record for electric cars, achieving 293.54 miles per hour (approximately 472 km/h) on the ATP test track in Germany. This figure surpasses the previous record of 272.61 miles per hour, set by the Aspark Owl.

The Yangwang U9 is a Track Edition variant, which has a power output of 2977 horsepower, thanks to four electric motors, each generating 744 horsepower. The car is capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 2.36 seconds.

A key element that allowed for this new record to be achieved was the independent torque vectoring system, which controls each motor up to 100 times per second to optimize traction with the road. The car also utilized special performance tires developed by Giti Tire, which reduce the loss of torque.

The record was set by professional driver Mark Basseng, who previously achieved 243 miles per hour in the standard U9 in 2024. He noted that he did not expect to surpass his previous record at such speed.

Yangwang, a brand belonging to BYD, plans to expand into the European market, including preparations for the launch of the Denza brand in 2026.
