The Growth of Women's Sports Leagues is Increasing the Popularity of Women in Sports
- Women’s sports leagues, such as WPBL and PWHL, are announcing a growing popularity of women in sports.
- The creation of strong brands is key to attracting sponsors and ensuring the success of the leagues.
- Investors are showing interest in new women’s leagues due to the increase in viewership and media coverage.
In the United States, a new professional women’s baseball league is being announced, 70 years after the last one. This league, known as the Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL), plans its launch in 2026. The project initiators, Justin Siegal and Kit Stain, studied successful examples of women’s leagues and analyzed past mistakes to create a stable and sustainable structure.
Many new leagues, including the Women’s Hockey Professional League (PWHL), which debuted in 2024, and the three-point women’s basketball league Unrivaled, which started this year, have emerged over the last three years. These leagues aim to attract a large audience, capitalizing on the growing interest in women’s sports and financial investments from sponsors.
The success of new leagues depends on broad recognition, financial incentives for players, and strong presence on social media. For example, the Unrivaled league completed its first season with an average salary for players of $200,000, which is the highest indicator among women’s leagues, as well as significant audience engagement.
PWHL, which has six teams with strong local support, showed an increase in viewership of 27% in the second season, thanks to a large number of viewers at matches, which took place in larger arenas in Toronto and Montreal.
An important aspect for new leagues is also the creation of brands that can attract sponsors. PWHL has developed teams with unique names and logos, which additionally helps to establish a connection between sponsors and the league.
With the growing interest in women’s sports, new leagues are gaining attention from investors. For example, League One Volleyball secured over $100 million in funding, including contributions from sports investors. However, as experts note, the success of new leagues depends not only on visibility but also on smart branding and community development.
