The Halt of the Offshore Project Threatens Thousands of Jobs
- The halt of the offshore project Revolution Wind threatens thousands of jobs.
- The project, which supports over 2500 jobs, was 80% complete.
- Governors of Rhode Island and Connecticut have expressed disappointment with the Trump administration's decision.
The Trump administration issued a directive to halt work on the nearly completed offshore project Revolution Wind, located in federal waters approximately 15 miles south of Rhode Island. This project, which was 80% complete, supports over 2500 jobs in the U.S., including in construction, manufacturing, and servicing.
The directive was issued after the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) expressed concerns regarding national security. However, no specific details were provided regarding the concerns that led to this directive. The Revolution Wind project, when completed, is expected to provide electricity for over 350,000 households in Rhode Island and Connecticut.
Governor of Connecticut Ned Lamont expressed disappointment with the halting of the project, stating that it seriously impacts the state's economy and the reliability of electricity. Labor leaders also criticized the decision, calling it a betrayal of working-class interests.
This project is one of five offshore projects that are being developed in the U.S., and there are others that the Trump administration is attempting to halt this year. In April, a similar directive was issued for the Empire Wind project.
