Merkel calls for a meeting between Zelensky and Putin
- Merkel warned about possible sanctions against Russia.
- The meeting between Zelensky and Putin could take place in two weeks.
- Russia has proposed new conditions for negotiations.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merkel emphasized the necessity of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He stressed that if the meeting does not take place soon, new sanctions against Russia may be introduced.
Merkel made these statements during a press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Kenney. He expressed hope that the upcoming two-week meeting would take place, and noted that in the event of its cancellation, the USA and European countries would be compelled to discuss further actions.
The issue of a meeting between Zelensky and Putin became relevant after negotiations between US President Donald Trump and the Russian leader in Almaty. Several possible locations for the summit are being considered, including Budapest, which is supported by American media, while the Kremlin prefers Moscow, which has been previously declined by the Ukrainian side.
Moreover, Russia has proposed new conditions for possible negotiations. The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov stated that Putin is ready to meet with Zelensky only on the condition that all issues that will be raised at the level of state leaders will be thoroughly prepared in advance. Zelensky, for his part, emphasized that it is Russia that hinders the meeting, and Ukraine will not withdraw from the negotiations.
