Experts recommend how to save with a thermostat
- Raising the thermostat by a few degrees saves energy.
- Humid climates require a special approach to cooling.
- Setting different thermostats can reduce expenses.
The question of whether to leave the thermostat on when you leave the house is relevant for many people. Some believe that turning off the thermostat for a few hours is the most common option, while others argue that it is better to leave it on to avoid excessive strain on the system during subsequent cooling periods.
Three experts agree that the optimal solution is raising the thermostat temperature by a few degrees during your absence. This allows you to maintain a comfortable level of humidity, reducing the risk of mold appearing in conditions of elevated humidity.
Studies show that adjusting the thermostat by 4-6 degrees Celsius over eight hours can save up to 10% on heating and cooling annually. It is also important to consider that humid climatic conditions may require a different approach, as the thermostat helps control humidity levels.
Strategies for thermostat use in different climates
In dry regions, such as Arizona, it may be allowed to raise the thermostat temperature. However, in humid climatic conditions, such as in Florida, it can lead to moisture accumulation, which complicates cooling and increases the risk of mold.
Professor of mechanical engineering Patrick Phelan notes that raising the thermostat by 1 degree Celsius can legally save nearly 3% on cooling costs. Turning off the thermostat for a few hours can also lead to more frequent cycles, as the system requires 15-30 minutes to reach maximum efficiency.
Types of thermostats and their effectiveness
The effectiveness of a thermostat also depends on its type. Conventional units are usually less effective, as they are harder to seal. Setting different thermostats, which automatically adjust based on the presence of people, can lead to significant savings.
Experts also recommend simple methods for cooling, such as closing curtains to lower the temperature in the building. Opening windows at night in most cases helps cool the premises, but humidity can become a problem in some regions.
