Melania Trump invites children to participate in the AI competition
- K-12 students can participate in the AI competition.
- Projects must address problems in communities.
- Registration continues until the end of December.
Washington (AP) — Melania Trump in a video invitation urged K-12 students to participate in a national competition sponsored by the government. The competition aims to encourage young people to work together, using artificial intelligence tools to solve problems in their communities.
“As someone who created an audio campaign based on artificial intelligence and supported an online-based law Take It Down Act, I have personally seen the potential of this powerful technology,” the first lady stated in a brief video, announcing the Presidential AI Competition. “Now I pass the torch of innovation to you,” she added.
All students from preschool to 12th grade are invited to "unleash their creativity and promote the spirit of American innovation," said Trump. Students who register must complete a project, utilizing methods or tools of artificial intelligence to solve community problems.
Michael Kratsios, director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, noted that possibilities for "boundaryless" projects exist, but the goal of the competition is to have students work together, especially since they will be using artificial intelligence in everyday life. “We want young Americans to be engaged in working with AI tools,” he said in the video interview on Fox News.
The registration opened in the video on the website. The team must include a parent or teacher. Project submissions must be ready by the end of December. Regional competitions will take place in the spring, and national competition winners will be invited to an event at the White House, Kratsios noted.
The competition was announced in an executive order signed by President Donald Trump to advance education in the field of artificial intelligence for young people in the U.S.
In April, she announced that her audio memoir "Melania" was "recorded entirely with the help of artificial intelligence — my own voice."
She also emphasized the negative side of artificial intelligence, urging Congress to pass legislation that imposes sanctions on online sexual exploitation involving real or created imagery by artificial intelligence. President Trump signed the Take It Down Act in April, and the first lady also signed it.
