Greece Will Not Send Troops to Ukraine
- Greece does not plan to send troops to Ukraine
- The country is ready to discuss peacekeeping guarantees
- Some countries are ready to send military contingents
This is reported by Ukrayinska Pravda, RBC Ukraine.
Greece is ready to discuss participation in future peacekeeping missions for Ukraine, but excludes the possibility of sending military contingents. This was reported by the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, citing diplomatic sources.
The Greek government considers participation in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine a politically sensitive issue that could undermine the readiness of Greece's armed forces. Athens is also cautious regarding comments about the readiness of Turkey, its long-time geopolitical rival, to send troops to Ukraine, noting that discussions are at a very early stage.
The Kathimerini newspaper reported that it is unclear whether any peacekeeping forces will be sent, and in what form they will be present or if anyone will participate. However, it is clear that some countries are more prepared than others to send their troops if such a decision is made.
The Greek government is waiting for more clarity regarding the structure of future peacekeeping missions for Ukraine, including whether to anticipate other forms of military assistance.
It should be noted that European officials are also discussing plans to send British and French military personnel to Ukraine as part of a peace agreement. Approximately 10 countries are ready to send troops.
Canadian Minister of Defence David McGuinty recently expressed confidence in Canada's ability to send troops to Ukraine after the war, should it be necessary.
