M&S Introduces Lamingtons to British Shelves

  • Lamingtons make their debut on British shelves
  • Available in classic and caramelized versions of the dessert
  • The price for a pack of two lamingtons will be £4

The company Marks & Spencer has started selling lamingtons, an Australian dessert, in Great Britain. This cake, traditionally made from a square piece of sponge cake, coated in chocolate glaze and rolled in desiccated coconut, has become popular in Australia and New Zealand.

M&S offers two versions of this dessert: classic chocolate lamington with coconut and a new variant with caramelized biscuit, which has become popular on social media since its launch in Woolworths in Australia last month. Both variants will be available in Great Britain and sold in packs of two for the price of £4.

The classic lamington from M&S is made from sponge cake based on a recipe, covered in chocolate sauce and coconut shavings, and also includes a variant with creamy buttercream. In turn, the variant with caramelized biscuit features chocolate sponge cake, coated in crumbs of biscuit, with buttercream and salted caramel.

The history of lamington is linked to the Governor of Queensland, Lord Lamington, who in the 1890s developed this dessert, utilizing leftover sponge cake, chocolate, and coconut for entertaining uninvited guests.

M&S lamingtons will be available for sale starting August 30 and will also be accessible through the Ocado platform.
