Britain helps students from Gaza obtain education

  • Britain plans to assist 30 students from Gaza to obtain places at universities.
  • In total, 39 students will receive scholarships for studies in Great Britain.
  • The evacuation of students depends on the approval of the Israeli authorities.

The British government has approved plans to assist 30 students from Gaza who have secured places at universities in Great Britain. These students are expected to evacuate next month, but their evacuation depends on the approval of the Israeli authorities.

The total number of students that the government plans to assist is 39. Earlier, it was announced that nine Chevening scholarships would be allocated to students at leading universities in Great Britain.

Chevening scholarships are funded by the government and are awarded to "exceptional individuals" for study on one-year master's programs in Great Britain. All 40 students identified by the government will have full funding for their scholarships.

Gerald from the Ministry of Internal Affairs noted that the process is "complex and challenging." The names of the students must be submitted to the Israeli authorities for obtaining permits, after which the students will be able to travel to a third country, possibly Jordan, for biometric checks.

Activists supporting the students welcomed the news but expressed concern about the lack of direct contact with the government and clear information about subsequent steps. Some students who are to receive full funding were not included in this list.

Dr. Nora Parr from the University of Birmingham, which coordinates support for students, expressed satisfaction that the government is willing to assist a larger group of students, but highlighted the concern about the lack of transparency in the process.

Among the students waiting for evacuation is 31-year-old Soha, who plans to start her studies in architecture in Great Britain. She expressed hope that all students would receive the same support.

Abtisam Mohamad, a deputy from the Labour Party, urged the government to assist in evacuating students, having signed a letter that received support from over 100 parliamentarians.

Gerald from the Ministry of Internal Affairs stressed that the government is doing everything possible to ensure a safe exit for this group of talented students to start the academic year in the autumn semester.
